Should you use the
Automated Teller Machine, aka ATM?
With a little bit of caution and some accurate record
keeping, you may use credit cards and ATM cards without the fear
of having your finances getting out of your control.

Use an ATM card for convenience. Use it to get money when you need
it. Use it to deposit money so it earns interest for you. Use it
to stay informed of where your money is by looking at the balance
in your accounts. Finally, use it for what I think is the biggest
advantage of all, to save time. You can use it 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, and avoid standing in bank lines.
If you realize that you can't put a nail in a piece
of wood without making a hole, you will recognize that there may
be side effects or potential hazards by using this card. First of
all, be sure that you are not incurring charges or fees for using
this service. Check with the rules and regulations of the institution
issuing the card. Most banks will not charge you if you use the
ATM machines at their branches. So, plan ahead, and try not to violate
this unless there is an emergency need for immediate cash.
Second, be sure that you are not using this card
as a debit card. Do not use this card for purchasing gasoline,
groceries or anything else. ONLY USE THIS CARD FOR BANKING SERVICES
such as depositing, withdrawing and transferring money.
One last word of caution, regarding the use of the
ATM machine. BE CAREFUL!, do not use a machine that is located in
an area that is not well lighted. Look around you, to be sure that
there is nobody watching, and waiting, for you to walk away with
cash in your hand. This is a very negative thought...but realistic.
It is a definite disadvantage to using the machines, so exercise
caution so that you may enjoy all of the conveniences.
